2014 - The 12th annual conference - Fremantle

The 12th annual conference of The Australia & New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders was held on 22-23 August 2014 at the Esplanade Hotel, Fremantle, Western Australia. 68 Oral papers and 14 Posters were presented following review of the Scientific Committee chaired by Dr. Anthea Fursland and A/Prof Susan Byrne, and are published in this supplement. Over 250 delegates attended the conference.
Keynote talks were by A/Professor Kelly Vitousek, from the University of Hawaii: More similar than strange: The power of “normal” explanations in the treatment of eating disorders and Prof. Tracey Wade of Flinders University: How do genes and the environment work together to increase risk for eating disorders? The conference also involved two Plenaries, Body Image (Jessica Smith, Phillippa Diedrichs, Beth Shelton and Susan Paxton) and Binge Eating Disorder (Kathleen Chinn, Fiona Sutherland, Emma Dove and Amy Lampard).
Three pre-conference workshops provided a variety of topics. Kelly Vitousek’s workshop focussed on utilising therapist-assisted exposure. Tracey Wade examined the evidence base for eating disorder prevention. Local GP Sue Martin chaired a session where Janice Russell, Terrill Bruere and Andrew Kennedy presented on gastro-intestinal complications, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and skeletal health. In addition 12 in-conference workshops addressed a range of clinical and practical themes. The conference concluded with a debate on the proposition that “Eating Disorders are Brain Disorders” featuring Geoff Buckett, Carolyn Costin, Sloane Madden, Jessica Moncrieff-Boyd, Stephanie Wade and Tracey Wade.
The conference proceedings are published in a Supplement of the Journal of Eating Disorders.

The 11th Annual Conference was held in Melbourne on 23-24 August, 2013. (22 August Training day).
Keynote talks were by Susie Orbach (The Politics of The Body And The Body Politic) & Joe Proeitto (Why is it so difficult to maintain weight loss?.
Pre-conference workshops were by Susie Orbach (How do we get a body?), Jennifer Gaudiani (Intro & Advanced Medical Management), Carlyn Costin (What do you do when...?) as well as FBT, nursing and dietetic workshops. Plenaries were on "Weight Management" and "i-tools and the Internet". A breakfast Case Panel Discussion was held featuring Susie Orbach (psychodynamic), Anthea Fursland (CBT) and Carolyn Costin (client centred). 11 short workshops and a cocktail party featuring a jazz combo were also included.

2012 - The 10th annual conference - Adelaide

The 2012 annual conference was held in Adelaide on 23rd - 25th August at the Crowne Plaza Adelaide. This conference marked a decade since the inception of ANZAED. Keynote speakers were Professor Carolyn Black-Becker and Professor Marika Tiggemann. A pre-conference PTSD-comorbidity workshop by Carolyn Black Becker and 9 in-conference workshops featured, as well as a tour of Adelaide Art Gallery focussing on body and eating themes. There was a breakfast debate "Clinical ‘know-how’ is more important than research evidence in treatment". Moderated by Chris Thornton, debate protagonists included Howard Steiger, Mimi Israel, Virginia McIntosh, Andrew Wallis, Carolyn Costin & Anjanette Casey.

2011 - The 9th annual conference - Sydney

The 9th Annual Conference of the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders was held on Friday August 26- Saturday August 27th, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Coogee Beach, Sydney. It was a very successful conference, with over 250 attendees to the Clinical Training Day and the Conference. Kudos to Professor Phillipa Hay, the Conference Convenor, and her Programme Committee: Jeremy Freeman, Dr. Sloane Madden and Professor Stephen Touyz.
We had two thought-provoking keynotes. On the first day Professor Caroline Meyer, from Loughborough University in the UK, talked about excessive exercise and eating disorders, and on the second day Professor Perminder Sachdev, from the University of New South Wales, spoke on insights from neuroscience on anorexia nervosa.
The Clinical Training Day, preceding the conference, involved four workshops. The two excellent advanced workshops were: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) by Chris Thornton, Dr. Carla Walton & Anjanette Casey; and Managing Compulsive Exercise by Prof. Caroline Meyer. For the first time we offered two introductory workshops, in conjunction with the National Collaboration on Eating Disorders (NEDC). These were: an Introduction to Eating Disorders, by senior CEED staff Dr. Beth Shelton and Michelle Roberton; and Working with Carers, by Dr. Naomi Crafti of EDFV.

On the 27th and 28th August 2010 ANZAED held its first conference held in New Zealand, at the Auckland Hilton.
The theme was: ―New Decade; New Directions: New Developments in Eating Disorder Treatment.
Keynote speaker s were Dr Kate Tchanturia, Consultant Clinical Psychologist from Kings College, London and Professor Peter Joyce, Dean of the University of Otago, Christchurch, and Director of the Psychological Medicine Research Unit.
On the day prior to the conference Clinical Training Day was held with workshops by Dr Kate Tchanturia on Cognitive Remediation in the Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa; and Specialist Supportive Clinical Management of Anorexia Nervosa (SSCM) by Dr Virginia McIntosh,PhD and Dr Jennifer Jordan,PhD, Clinical Psychologists, both working in the Research Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Otago, Christchurch. 164 delegates attended from New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.
