The Peter Beumont ANZAED Young Investigator Prize will be awarded to a young

investigator from a germane discipline who is a member of ANZAED and has submitted the

abstract to the ANZAED Conference which is deemed to be the best by a selection

committee.

The annual Paul Foulkes ANZAED Clinician Scholarship is a prize for a clinician who can

demonstrate that their attendance at the ANZAED conference will be of be of substantial benefit to

the clinician, his/her organization, his/her clients and the community at large. A clinician working

in the eating disorder field who is a member of ANZAED is eligible to apply for this scholarship.

2010 Sydney Eating Disorders Conference 

‘Eating Disorders: Meeting the Challenge’

The Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders (CEDD), in conjunction with the Children's Hospital Westmead Eating Disorder Team and the Centre for Research into Adolescent Health, with support from The Mental Health Council of Australia are holding this two-day event which is suitable for both parents and professionals.

The conferencewill feature a number of renown international speakers, local experts, professionals and carers and will include several keynote talks, workshops and panel discussions regarding the implications of latest research.

Keynote Speakers

The event will feature 3 great international speakers, all world innovators in three key fields: 

Josie Geller– engagement, motivation and enhancing readiness for change
Dianne Neumark-Sztainer- prevention on a family, school and community level, including the cross-over with obesity prevention
Daniel Le Grange– evidence based treatment for adolescents, particularly family based treatments.

The conference includes workshops, plenaries, and also a Training Day by Josie Geller after the conference. 

Abstract submissions for posters and short oral presentations are now open.

Clinical Training Day: Thursday 27th August, 2009

ANZAED also offered a Clinical Training Day on Thursday 27th August, 2009 which featured two four hour workshops presenting on clinical methods for treating eating disorders. 

9.30am - 12.00pm
DR. ANGELA MORGAN
presented on 'Mindfulness-based Interventions for Binge-Eating: Current Research Findings and Applications in Clinical Settings'

Dr. Angela Morgan has recently completed a randomised control trial of a mindfulness-based treatment for women with Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and EDNOS. In this workshop, she provided an overview of the theoretical foundations of a mindfulness-based treatment applied to eating disorders, and outline specific skills and techniques that are effective in treatment.

This workshop provided the following: 
* An overview of a Mindfulness-based model for binge eating-related disorders (Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder, EDNOS)
* Formulations of eating disorders from a mindfulness perspective
* Tailor mindfulness-based treatment programs to individual clients
* Practical and effective skills in mindfulness-based techniques

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: PROFESSOR KATHLEEN PIKE: presented a four hour workshop entitled 'Crossing the Borders:  Integrating Key Components of Evidence Based Treatments for Eating Disorders to Enhance Efficacy'  

Prof. Kathleen Pike is a clinical psychologist who has achieved international recognition for her expertise in the area of eating disorders. Prof. Pike's research focuses on the assessment and treatment of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and risk factors for eating disorders in a cross-cultural context. Prof. Pike has developed an internationally disseminated and evidence based treatment program of cognitive behavioural therapy for anorexia nervosa.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

1. Associate Professor Brett McDermott (Australia) is the Director of the Mater Child and Youth Mental Health Service in Queensland.  He is an internationally recognised expert on treating children and adolescents with eating disorders and his research interests include post-traumatic stress and depression in children and adolescents. Brett presented on the topic: "Eating Disorders in Children and Adolescents: From Fussy Eating to Fad Treatments"  

2. Professor Kathleen Pike (Japan) is a clinical psychologist who has achieved international recognition for her expertise in the area of eating disorders. Prof. Pike's research focuses on the assessment and treatment of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and risk factors for eating disorders in a cross-cultural context. Prof. Pike has developed an internationally disseminated and evidence based treatment program of cognitive behavioural therapy for anorexia nervosa.
