ANZAED was pleased to see mental health feature in the Federal Government’s 2020-2021 Budget released on Tuesday night. The number of Medicare-subsidised sessions for psychological therapy will be increased from 10 to 20 sessions under Better Access. In addition, the availability of Medicare rebates for telehealth services has also been extended in the October budget.
ANZAED advocated for the extension of telehealth and is currently collaborating with NEDC to seek input from members on eating disorder presentations in Australia over the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The availability of Medicare funding for an increased number of psychological therapy sessions and telehealth services, is welcome news for the eating disorders sector and especially for those with other co-occurring diagnosis, and comes at a time of increased need for services for for people with eating disorders.
